The Opportunity

On any given day, Avenues New York students might be building a 3D printer, in China, with peers from around the world. Or constructing a tiny houseas they learn about sustainability. Or putting on an original TEDx conference as part of a Mastery project. These are only a few examples of how an Avenues education prepares students for a globally connected, innovation-driven, and largely unknown future. The Upper Division, with an enrollment of nearly 800 students spanning grades 6-12, is where our ambitious goals for Avenues graduates, defined in our mission statement, are most comprehensively realized. 

The Associate Director of Operations is a key leader in the division, dedicated to maintaining an exceptional operating environment and outstanding experience for our students, colleagues and families. S/he joins a talented leadership team which ensures that the division is an extraordinarily engaging place to work, a laboratory of deeper learning for all, and a thriving community. 

What You'll Do

This role's essential responsibilities include, but are not limited to, the following: 

Operations and Leadership

  • Ensure that the division operates smoothly and efficiently, spearheading and continually improving our systems around scheduling, attendance, facilities, health and safety, etc.
  • Contribute significantly as a key member of the division's leadership team, partnering with the division head to continually improve the team's functioning, cohesion and overall effectiveness
  • Partner closely with other divisional leaders and colleagues across functions to problem-solve, simplify, and clarify any "pain point" areas, in service of improved experience for our stakeholders
  • Lead planning and execution of major division-wide projects as assigned, impacting across areas like operations, academic programming, scheduling, and others 
  • Develop and execute a clear and comprehensive work plan and playbook for top-notch Upper Division operations; collaborate across Avenues to share better operations practices. 
  • Align with, shape and implement campus-wide priorities around operational excellence, stakeholder experience, and other relevant areas
  • Manage the non-personnel budget of the division, ensuring that our financial resources are used wisely in alignment with divisional priorities

People

  • Lead a culture of relentlessly focused on high quality service and continually improving the experience of students, colleagues and families and colleagues 
  • Build and lead a high-performing, highly engaged divisional operations team of three direct reports
  • Enthusiastically tackle the innumerable responsibilities and challenges that come with growing and improving an ambitious and innovative school

What You'll Bring

  • A track record of leading high-performing operations in an educational setting, with teaching and/or school leadership experience strongly preferred
  • A keen analytical, problem solving approach, including in ambiguous situations that require figuring out new solutions rather than taking predetermined paths to success
  • A track record of building highly effective, engaged teams and that get great results
  • Ability to lead effectively through relationships, collaboration and influence
  • Tremendous ability to plan, design, and manage operational systems; excellent project manager
  • Sense of deep personal responsibility for the organization's success
  • Precise and clear written and verbal communication; a knack for creating simplicity and clarity
